Christening Spoons & Cutlery

Christening Spoons & Cutlery

The tradition of giving silver spoons to babies at Christenings goes back to the Tudor period when Apostle Spoons were a common gift. This custom is thought to be the origin of the phrase "born with a silver spoon in his mouth", since it was only children of wealthy families who were well placed enough to receive spoons in sterling silver.

Our growing spoon collection includes some classic designs. Loop spoons and pushers were the first cutlery a baby ever used - easy to grasp and simple to handle, they were probably still no less messy than today's utensils. Also, have a look at the Stork Spoon. This is produced using the same dies and stamps from the beginning of the last century.
