The design is based on the ICTHUS symbol adopted by early Christians as a way of identifying each other. The Greek word for fish, icthus, is an acrostic of the Greek words, Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter which translates as Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour. The symbol also reflected Jesus's wish that his disciples became Fishers of Men.
